MOVIN' MAVS SECOND AT NATIONAL TOURNAMENT. The Movin' Mavs wheelchair basketball team fell eight points shy of a seventh national crown in March. UTA lost to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, 69-62, in the National Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball Association title game at Marshall, Minn. Coached by Jim Hayes, the Movin' Mavs were in the national championship game for the 13th time. UTA will host the national tournament next year.

NETTERS WIN SLC TITLE. The women's tennis team won both the Southland Conference regular-season and postseason tournament titles for the fourth time in the past six years. UTA defeated McNeese State, 4-0, in the tournament championship match April 26 at Lake Charles, La., and advanced to the NCAA regional tournament. Guided by coach Christian Wassmer, the Lady Mavs also won both titles in 1999, 2000 and 2001. Monika Peciulionyte, a freshman from Lithuania, led UTA at the No. 1 singles position, followed by Marketa Cizova, a senior from the Czech Republic, at No. 2. In men's action, two-time defending champion UTA lost in the finals to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. David Corrie, a senior from London, was named SLC Men's Player of the Year.

BUCHANAN SETS CAREER ASSIST RECORD. Krystal Buchanan became the women's basketball team's career assist leader during a Jan. 7 game against Louisiana-Monroe. The 5-7 point guard from DeSoto finished her junior year with 441 career assists, surpassing Gale Haynes' record of 332 set in 1993-97. Buchanan also set a single-season record for assists in 2003-04 with 167, breaking her own mark of 149 set as a freshman.

PETERSSON EARNS SLC CROSS COUNTRY AWARD. Senior Erik Petersson was voted the Southland Conference Male Cross Country Student-Athlete of the Year in 2003. An international business major from Goteborg, Sweden, with a 3.92 grade average, he placed seventh at the 2003 SLC Cross Country Championship in the fall, earning all-SLC honors for the fourth time. Each conference sport honors a performer who achieves excellence in academics and athletics.

SCHOLAR-ATHLETES NAMED. Volleyball senior Melissa Robinett and tennis sophomore Anete Rozkalne were named Co-Women's Scholar-Athletes of the Year at the All-Sports Banquet in May. Junior golfer Jordan Krantz was named Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year. History Professor Jerry Rodnitzky received the Faculty/Staff Loyalty Award.

UTA GOLFER QUALIFIES FOR SOUTH AFRICAN OPEN. Tyrone Mordt became the first UTA golfer to qualify for a professional tour event while still in college when he earned a spot in the South African Airways Open in January. Mordt, a UTA sophomore from Johannesburg, South Africa, was the only amateur to make it through the qualifying rounds; he shot a 68. Included among the professionals were Colin Montgomerie and Lee Westwood.

WHEELCHAIR PLAYERS CLAIM TITLES. Freshman Danny Fik and sophomore Sarah Casteel captured the singles titles at the inaugural United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Collegiate Wheelchair Tennis Championships held May 1-2 at the UTA Tennis Center. Fik beat Middle Tennessee's Kevin Green, 6-3, 6-0, in the men's singles final, and Casteel topped Arizona's Nicole Saltzberg, 6-4, 6-2, in the women's final. UTA is coached by Jim Hayes and Marie Stepanova.

HAGLUND PACES INDOOR TRACK. Kasja Haglund qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships with a school-record 4:42.51 in the mile run during the NCAA Qualifiers Meet at Notre Dame University in March. The senior from Sweden finished second in the Southland Conference indoor mile with a time of 4:52.52-the 13th time that she earned all-conference honors, including cross country, indoor track and outdoor track events. Also earning all-SLC honors were junior Shaniqua White (400 meters) and sophomore Ivorita Taylor (800 meters). Haglund and Taylor joined with senior Lisa Haglund (Kasja's twin) and sophomore Nicole Noel to finish second in the distance medley relay.
