Jonathan Campbell and Tanya Dowdey have donated a large portion of their African art to the College of Liberal Arts. The works are on display in the Fine Arts Building. Eventually, they plan to give all of their African art collection to UT Arlington.

More than 50 teams frolicked in the muck at the 23rd annual Oozeball mud volleyball tournament on Greek Row. One of UT Arlington’s most popular and longest-running traditions, the event benefits student scholarships.

UT Arlington launched the fall 2013 semester with Maverick Stampede, a week packed full of entertaining and educational programs that welcome students to campus. At Move-In Day, the University community helped new students settle in to their residence halls. The next day, nearly 3,000 students, faculty, and staff attended the MavsMeet Convocation, a formal assembly commemorating the beginning of the academic year in College Park Center. The annual event was followed by music, games, food, and fun at the AfterParty on The Green at College Park. New Mavericks also attended Success U, a two-day mini-camp designed to prepare them for academic success.

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas offered a heartfelt account of his life as an undocumented immigrant in the first lecture of the 2013–14 Maverick Speakers Series on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at Texas Hall. A native of the Philippines whose mother sent him to the U.S. at age 12 to live with his grandparents, Vargas said he has spent much of his life trying to prove he’s an American.

By refusing to take “no” for an answer, Bill Rasmussen built ESPN into the worldwide leader of TV sports programming. He detailed his challenges and triumphs as part of the Maverick Speakers Series.

Astronaut, aviator, and author Mark Kelly spoke about America’s future at Tuesday night’s Maverick Speakers Series lecture in Texas Hall. Commander Kelly is the husband of U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

Emmy winner Jeff Corwin has been working for the conservation of endangered species and ecosystems around the world for nearly three decades, but he is best known as the host of the Animal Planet show The Jeff Corwin Experience.

R&B singer Aaron Neville and jazz great Ellis Marsalis showed why they are music legends Tuesday night at College Park Center. The duo performed and spoke about their musical lives for the last Maverick Speakers Series event of the academic year.

For one night in November, College Park Center transformed into an oversized comedy club. As part of the Maverick Speakers Series, Saturday Night Live star Seth Meyers entertained a sold-out crowd with an hour-long stand-up routine.

Started in 1980 to celebrate the opening of Maverick Stadium, Bed Races is one of the oldest traditions on campus. The theme for this year’s annual race and activities was “A Blue Carpet Affair” and participants were encouraged to dress the part. The event also includes costume competition, group photos, games, novelties, field goal kicking competition and music entertainment.
