Whereas | the ceremonial cannon was historically fired every day at midday at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), serving as a symbolic tradition that connected the university community, and; |
Whereas | the discontinuation of this practice has left a void in the campus’s historical traditions, and bringing back the cannon for special occasions would revive this valued tradition, and; |
Whereas | reinstating the ceremonial cannon for significant events such as official university ceremonies, national holidays like the Fourth of July, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and other special occasions would enhance the solemnity and sense of community on campus, and; |
Whereas | the cannon would also serve as a means to honor and remember UTA students, faculty, staff, or ROTC members who have passed, offering a meaningful tribute and symbol of respect, and; |
Whereas | the UTA ROTC has agreed to fully fund and manage all expenses associated with the cannon’s use, ensuring no financial impact on the university or its students, and; |
Whereas | notifications will be sent to all students, faculty, and staff prior to any cannon firings, and the UTA Police Department will be informed to ensure safety and coordination during these events, and; |
Be It Further Resolved That | the University of Texas at Arlington reinstate the ceremonial cannon for use on special occasions such as ceremonies, holidays, and to honor fallen members of the UTA community, with the support of the UTA ROTC, and; |
Be It Further Resolved That | the university implement a formal notification process to inform the campus community and UTA ROTC coordinate with UTA Police prior to any cannon firing to maintain safety and clear communication. |
