Whereas | Historically, students of the University of Texas at Arlington have chosen their schedules, professors, course sections, and enrolled themselves in courses. |
Whereas | The University College has begun a pilot program that will fully enroll freshmen Engineering and Business students in their courses starting in Spring 2014 prior to their approval and without the students selecting their sections, professors, or schedules. In some cases, this will be done without the student ever meeting with an advisor in a one-on-one environment. |
Whereas | The University College intends to extend this program to all freshmen starting in Fall 2014 and students will not have the ability to change their schedules without meeting with an advisor and giving them a compelling academic reason. |
Whereas | Many students have voiced their opposition to this program citing various reasons including having the ability to choose their own professors, potential work schedule conflicts, desired class times, and historically, University College has sometimes made mistakes. |
Whereas | A student's education can vary depending on the individual student, the classes or schedules they may need or want to pursue, and the time frame in which they may wish to take any particular course during their academic career as many core classes do not have prerequisites. |
Whereas | The University College has not always been accommodating to a particular students needs, an automatic enrollment system does not teach students how to work with and use the MyMav system, and planning a schedule furthers the skills of a student in learning responsibility and organization. Planning their own schedules also grant students more control over the course of their academic career. |
Be It Further Resolved That | While students should be required to seek the advice of a university advisor, all students of The University of Texas at Arlington have the option to self-enroll themselves in courses, that any automatic enrollment by a University College advisor meet with the express written or electronic approval of a student, that all students are left with the option to choose their section numbers and professors at the time of their enrollment regardless of the opinion of a University College advisor, and that all students are made aware of this policy during their advising sessions. |
