Whereas | The State of Texas is faced with an approximated $11-$21 Billion Budget Deficit for the 2012-2013 biennium; and |
Whereas | State leadership is asking for budget cuts across state expenditures; and |
Whereas | Higher education has sustained 41% of the budget cuts for the 2010-2011 biennium; and |
Whereas | Additional budget cuts (2-3%) are already being asked of higher education institutions; and |
Whereas | Senate Bill 52 of the 82nd Texas Legislature Regular Session proposes a tax-free textbook weekend; and |
Whereas | A similar version of Senate Bill 52 (Senate Bill 22) was introduced in the 81st Regular Session of the Texas Legislature with an attached fiscal note projecting a negative impact of approximately $68,000,000 for the biennium ending August 31, 2011. |
Be It Further Resolved That | The University of Texas at Arlington Student Congress recognizes the negligible benefit for individuals as compared to the fiscal ramifications for the State revenue; and |
Be It Further Resolved That | The University of Texas at Arlington Student Congress opposes the passage of Senate Bill 52 in the 82nd Texas Legislature Regular Session. |
