Whereas | The University has recently outlined some of its 'Mavericks Go Green' initiatives, one of which is waste reduction; and |
Whereas | Examples of waste reduction initiatives include UT Arlington employees switching to 'paperless' earning statements and professors no longer providing paper copies of syllabi to their students (they are available online); and |
Whereas | The Shorthorn prints paper editions four times a week (Tuesday through Friday) during the fall and spring semesters and once a week during the summer (Wednesday); and |
Whereas | The Shorthorn offers '.pdf' versions of its publications online; and |
Whereas | The Shorthorn's website includes all content published in each newspaper and many additional features; and |
Whereas | The printing costs associated with paper editions are estimated (from previous Student Service Advisory Committee [SSAC] budgets) to be over $250,000 per academic year; and The distribution costs associated with paper editions are estimated (from previous SSAC budgets) to be over $10,000 per academic year; and |
Be It Further Resolved That | The Shorthorn no longer print and distribute paper editions on a regular basis (to reduce waste and the current associated costs of printing and distribution). |
Be It Further Resolved That | The Shorthorn maintain its current guidelines for 'reprinting,' so that paper editions may be available to those who desire them. |
Be It Further Resolved That | The Shorthorn should be more progressive in utilizing Web 2.0 to publish online editions to maintain its mission of: 'providing news and information to the UT Arlington community, providing a forum of opinion for the UT Arlington community, and providing training for students interested in careers in journalism, advertising, and related professions .' |
