Remarks | FAILED. The resolution as phrased would be in essence the university supporting a single religion, which this committee and university cannot support. The research has led to the committee suggesting that the resolution be rephrased and resubmitted. |
Whereas | UTA has a very diverse population of different religions and ethnicities, and UTA promotes privacy and religious freedom for its community; and |
Whereas | Among the UTA community, approximately four hundred members are Muslim. Muslims are obligated to say their prayers five times a day. These Muslim students, faculty, and staff do not have any room in the campus to pray; and |
Whereas | Many students miss their prayers and some pray in the hallways of Nedderman Hall and Ransom Hall, which does not look good, and it is hard to concentrate on prayers. These students keep their prayer rugs and holy books in an open cabinet in the hallway. A room for these students will provide them a place to pray and have mental tranquility; and |
Whereas | There are some universities that provide rooms for prayers. |
Be It Further Resolved That | UTA provide a prayer room for its Muslim community, preferably in Nedderman Hall, Woolf Hall, Ransom Hall, or the central library. |
