Whereas Since its origin in 1968, the Greek system continues to be a vitally important part of UTA; and
Whereas The members of Sororities and Fraternities contribute to the surrounding community through philanthropy and community service functions; and
Whereas Each semester the Greek system desires to attract the highest caliber of students to pledge their respective sorority/fraternity; and
Whereas All greek organizations desire to have substantial awareness and publicity for the greek system as a whole; and
Whereas The Houses of Kappa Sigma, Phi Gamma Delta, Kappa Alpha, Zeta Tau Alpha, Delta Zeta, Sigma Chi, Delta Tau Delta, Omega Psi Phi, and Sigma Nu list their addresses as Second Street; and
Whereas Second Street is commonly referred to as "GREEK ROW".
Be It Further Resolved That The section of Second Street extending from Davis Street to Nedderman Drive be officially renamed GREEK ROW and have an official street sign that designates this, and this would be a momentous achievement for the Greek system as a whole; and
Be It Further Resolved That Although the Houses of Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Delta Delta, Delta Sigma Theta, Phi Mu, Alpha Phi Alpha, Phi Delta Theta, Pi Kappa Alpha, Pi Kappa Phi, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and the Triangle are not located on Second Street - this would still be great building awareness of the strength of the Greek system and what it offers, and from a research standpoint, Mr. Steve Oliver, of the Department of Transportation of the City of Arlington, was contacted and he said "This would be able to be done as long as there was consensus on the street that this name change was desired;" and
Be It Further Resolved That From a research perspective, Mr. Steve Oliver indicated that "Since Second Street is discontinuous and doesn't run all the way through the University, and since it is entirely composed of University property (the Greek houses are run by UTA Greek Presidents) and the apartments are University property, this would be feasible," and from a research standpoint, Mr. Mike Hassler, the Director of Transportation for the City of Arlington was contacted and he indicated that he didn't see any problem with doing it as long as there was support from residents all along the street; and
Be It Further Resolved That Mr. Oliver said the process would be as follows: (1) get the support of the residents of Second Street by petitions (2) get the backing of the University (3) mail this document to the Director of Transportation, Mike Hassler, City of Arlington, P.O. Box 231, Arlington, Texas 76019-0231 and (4) members of the City staff would poll the residents on the street and determine support (5) it would go before the City Council to be approved, and from a research standpoint, Eric Leidlein, UTA Coordinator for Apartments and Houses, was contacted about how the residents of University Village Apartments would be impacted, and Mr. Leidlein expressed the following concerns: that prospective apartment dwwellers may think the apartments are located right next to the Greek Houses, who would pay for the residents to have the addresses on their checkbooks changed to read "Greek Row", and he mentioned the perceived image that people may have of apartments with the address of "Greek Row;" and
Be It Further Resolved That Mr. Oliver indicted the City of Arlington would be responsible for changing the addresses of cable boxes, electricity and water, etc., and from a research standpoint, Wayne Gay, UTA Police Chief, said, "There would be no drawbacks from the Police Department. Changes on campus maps and student handbooks could be easily taken care of," and the Police Chief stated, "I'd like to see it done," and Dr. Kent Gardner, stated, "Since it is referred to as Greek Row, it sounds good to me," and Kent Pawlak, Advisor to the Greeks, stated, "With the planned Greek expansion in that area, I'd like to see a GREEK ROW CIRCLE to include Summit Street;" and
Be It Further Resolved That Mr. Steve Oliver, City of Arlington was contacted about this option, and he indicated, "The City cannot rename part of one street and leave the other the current name due to the trouble emergency vehicles may have in locating an address," and Kent Pawlak, Advisor to the Greeks, added, "However, this would be an excellent idea. The new street name would be great!" and this would be a great marketing tool for the fraternities and sororities, as it would appear on their official addresses, campus maps, and on an actual street sign that would replace the Second Street Sign. Brian Chase, president of Phi Gamma Delta and former Student Body President, stated, "The name change would show that UTA is a student - oriented university and would help improve the image of the school"
