Whereas | All UTA students are required to complete four semesters of exercise and sport activities (EXSA) courses before graduation; and |
Whereas | Many of these courses only teach a new skill and do not even require any physical exercise; and |
Whereas | Many students exercise regularly and play sports outside of EXSA time; and |
Whereas | Credit by examination for academic classes is offered to students who can demonstrate appropriate knowledge in a subject. However, even if a student is physically fit and an expert in a particular sport, he or she cannot test out of EXSA courses; and |
Whereas | Some of the exemption policies where certain students do not have to take any EXSA courses are in violation of the University's Age Discrimination Policy; and |
Whereas | At many colleges and universities, including the University of Texas at Austin, EXSA courses are optional and not required for graduation. No EXSA courses at all are offered at UT-Dallas. |
Be It Further Resolved That | Exercise and sport activity courses at the University of Texas at Arlington be optional and not a requirement for graduation; and |
Be It Further Resolved That | The implementation of this policy would save students time, fees, and tuition money. It would also save the University money due to a drop of enrollment in EXSA courses, a decrease in use and wear on equipment, and a diminished need for so many EXSA instructors. |
