Remarks IMPLEMENTED - Resolution 92-15 asked for this, but it failed in the Undergraduate Assembly. This resolution is another attempt, and it was approved by the Academic Standards Committee on April 6, 1994. Thus the Grade Replacement Policy was born.
Whereas A grade recieved in a course may not accurately reflect a student's proficiency and understanding in that subject; and
Whereas That grade does not take into account unusual circumstances that might have adversely affected the student's academic performance; and
Whereas Under the current acadmeic policy, upon recieving a grade of D or F in a course and retaking that course, a student's GPA is calculated by taking the average of the grades.
Be It Further Resolved That After retaking a course, only the second grade, not necessarily the highest, will be used in calculating a student's GPA; and
Be It Further Resolved That The replacement of a grade for GPA calculation shall apply only to the second time the same course is taken provided that the student recieved a D or F in the first course. A grade recieved from the same course taken a third time shall not replace any pervious grade and will be automatically averaged into the GPA with the other grades recieved from that course; and
Be It Further Resolved That All course attempts and the grades received will be shown on the student's transcript, and this policy will not apply to courses that may be repeated for credit as the subject matter changes and are so listed in the most recent course catalog; and
Be It Further Resolved That This policy will not apply to courses taken on a pass/fail basis, and this policy will not apply to degreed undergraduates and graduate students; and
Be It Further Resolved That This policy will apply to a maximum of three different courses over a student's undergraduate tenure at UTA. Example: a student could take Spanish 1441, Business 2301, and History 1311; the student could not retake another course and still use this policy; and
Be It Further Resolved That There will be a time line when a student must declare a course is a retake -- census day will be used when this declaration by the student must be made. All withdrawals will be considered a repeat. The only exception is if the student withdraws from the University that semster. If a student declares an intention to repeat a course and to use the second grade, and then subsequently withdraws from that course, and receives a grade of W, then that will be recorded as one attempt. The W would not substitute for the previous D or F, and this policy will be University-wide, and this policy will effect for students who have failed but not retaken a class.
