Remarks | This is a remark |
Whereas | UTA Campus Police are currently required to issue citations for $50.00 to anyone involved in a vehicular accident on a campus lot (see Parking Rules and Regulations Section VIII-J-g, cited below); and |
Whereas | An accident, by definition, is an unforeseen incident that is not supposed to happen; and |
Whereas | Issuing tickets for an accident cannot be considered as a preventative measure for future accidents since accidents are not premeditated; and |
Whereas | Municipal police are not subject to any requirement to issue mandatory tickets to someone involved in an accident on public property; and |
Whereas | UT Arlington is a public university established on state property and should therefore not allocate its campus police officers more authority to issue tickets than municipal police officers; and |
Whereas | It is not the responsibility of the University to coerce students or staff into a driver's education class (the alternative to paying the fine), and If students are involved in an accident, they will be far less likely to involve campus police in the aftermath if they know that they will receive a citation, which could lead to hit-and-runs; and |
Be It Further Resolved That | The UT-Arlington Police Department cease issuing citations to those involved in on-campus accidents; and |
Be It Further Resolved That | A student should also not be required to take a computerized driver's education class in lieu of paying a fine; and |
Be It Further Resolved That | The computerized driver's education class be made optional to those involved in an accident on campus. |
