Six first-year students at The University of Texas at Arlington were awarded scholarships from the State Fair of Texas through its Big Tex Scholarship Program. The scholars collectively expressed gratitude for the program because it provides opportunities to advance their academic goals.

The scholars are:

  • Genesis Soto, biology major in the College of Science
  • Diego Gonzalez, criminal justice and criminology major in the College of Liberal Arts
  • Violeta Chico, nursing major in the College of Nursing and Health Innovation
  • Michele Trevino, nursing major in the College of Nursing and Health Innovation
  • Geraldy Luna Valdez, nursing major in the College of Nursing and Health Innovation

“Being selected as a 2024 Big Tex Scholar means a lot to me. With this opportunity, I will be able to attend college and pay for my classes,” said Chico. “This scholarship will also help reduce financial concerns. Knowing I have this financial support allows me to begin my college career at ease.”

Trevino said being selected is “beyond amazing” and significantly contributes to her educational goals.

“I will have the opportunity to get settled and lay a strong foundation for myself. This will allow me to fully dedicate myself to acquiring the knowledge and skills to excel in the field of nursing,” she said. “The financial support allows access to educational resources, training programs and networks in organizations to boost my overall learning experience.”

In honor of Juanita Craft, South Dallas resident and civil rights activist, the Big Tex Scholarship Program awards $6,000 scholarships to seniors from six high schools in the South Dallas and Fair Park areas.

State Fair of Texas President Mitchell Glieber said the partnership with the University is more than just a collaboration, it’s a shared commitment to investing in the future of Texas.

“Through the Big Tex Scholarship Program, we are privileged to support a remarkable group of scholars whose perseverance and ambition reflect the diverse spirit of our community. Every year, we are inspired by these students and the journey that lies before them,” he said. “This partnership not only strengthens our mission of supporting education and community involvement but also underscores the importance of making higher education accessible to all.”
