UTA professor recognized among best in profession
A University of Texas at Arlington professor has been recognized as rising star among manufacturing engineering scholars around the world by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME).
Chen Kan, assistant professor in the Department of Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering (IMSE), was one of 20 recipients of the 2024 Susan Smyth Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineers award. Since 1980, the honor has gone to manufacturing engineers aged 35 or younger for their exceptional contributions and accomplishments in the manufacturing industry.
“I am honored and humbled to receive this award and be placed among the best manufacturing engineers in the world,” Dr. Kan said. “It shows that my work is being recognized by my community. But the work isn’t done—my goal is to continue making valuable contributions.”
Kan was awarded for his work in using 3D data collection and processing to improve the quality of control of additive manufacturing products. He has published more than 30 journal articles, and his research has been funded by several federal agencies and industry.
“I appreciate the support from my mentors, collaborators and students,” Kan said. He hopes this award can open doors for him to continue his research in advanced manufacturing, specifically in the integration of advanced sensing and machine learning for manufacturing process monitoring and performance improvement.
Samson Gholston, ISME department chair, said he is proud to see Kan be recognized for his work.
“This prestigious recognition, presented by the SME, validates Dr. Kan’s significant achievements and contributions to manufacturing in his early career,” Dr. Gholston said. “His efforts also reflect positively on the University and on the IMSE department’s reputation as an example of UT Arlington's high-quality academic and research programs.”
