Endowed scholarship established to honor late faculty member
University of Texas at Arlington architecture Professor of Practice Kevin Sloan, who passed away in October 2021, made a lasting impact during his 40-year career in landscape architecture. Now friends and colleagues have created an endowed scholarship to celebrate his life and contributions to the profession.
The Kevin Sloan Scholarship Endowment will fund scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students majoring in architecture who demonstrate financial need. The first scholarship will be awarded in the fall of 2023.
Diane Cheatham, a friend and longtime client of Sloan’s landscape architecture business, donated $25,000 through an IRA distribution, helping to fully endow the fund.
"It is my honor to do something for someone I loved dearly," Cheatham said.
Additional gifts were made by former College of Architecture, Public Affairs and Planning (CAPPA) Dean Adrian Parr and her husband, former UTA Associate Professor Michael Zaretsky; JQ Engineering; Max Levy Architects and an anonymous donor.
Sloan made significant impacts to his field and his community through his work in CAPPA, the city of Dallas and the region. He founded the Kevin Sloan Studio in 2004 to principally focus on urban design and landscape architectural problems of metropolitan cities. Sloan became a professor of practice at UTA’s School of Architecture in 2005.
Throughout the course of his award-winning career, Sloan wrote for many publications, including Texas Architect. In early October 2021, the city of Dallas named the 12th Street Connector Park the Kevin W. Sloan Park in honor of his contributions to the city.
“Kevin Sloan was beloved not only as a professor at UTA, but throughout the landscape architecture and planning community,” UTA President Jennifer Cowley said. “This endowment is a fitting memorial to his outstanding influence at the University and in his field.”
“I am overwhelmed by the generosity of Kevin's colleagues and friends," said Diane Sloan, Kevin’s wife. “He would be thrilled to see his legacy living on through the education of the students who will receive this scholarship.”
