For new Mavericks, a virtual welcome to UTA

New Maverick Orientation moved online to help incoming students learn about UTA

New Maverick Orientation is a long-held tradition at The University of Texas at Arlington. Mandatory for incoming students, it is designed to facilitate their smooth transition into Maverick life.

With campus mostly closed for the summer, this annual program that lets new students learn about campus resources, discover opportunities and engage with future peers and mentors is now online.

“New Maverick Orientation sessions have been completely virtual,” said David Duvall, director of Maverick Orientation and Transition programs. “New freshmen, transfer students, veterans and international students have all engaged in Zoom meetings to learn about academic resources, student services and campus life.”

Online orientation features modules and live presentations that mirror the sessions that would have been enjoyed in person. Orientation leaders continue to welcome new Mavs to UTA, bring new students together and serve as a guide through the process.

“While many other universities are delivering orientations through online information modules or pre-recorded videos, UTA provides its orientation live each day to offer the best possible welcome to our new Mavericks,” Duvall said. “Orientation leaders have helped new students make connections during virtual small group sessions and answered hundreds of questions through the chat for each orientation.”

Family members also have unique sessions to connect with UTA’s Parent and Family Center and get their questions answered. The center offers a variety of programs and events that celebrate student involvement, engagement and achievement.

“These are uncertain times, but we are doing our very best to answer all questions about next steps in relation to orientation, connecting to the University and how parents and families can best support their emerging adults,” said Tasha Talton, interim director of UTA’s Parent and Family Center.
