In newest Texas state park, a Maverick leads the way

For James Adams (’17 MPA), the commute to work isn’t far. In fact, he arrives the moment he steps out of his front door and into 4,000-plus acres of rugged wilderness. As superintendent of the soon-to-be-opened Palo Pinto Mountains State Park—Texas’ 90th state park and the first in North Texas in over 25 years—Adams lives onsite and oversees every phase of its development.

Nooyi encourages lifelong learning

Indra Nooyi, business leader and bestselling author, spoke to an audience of students, faculty, staff, and community members at UT Arlington on Tuesday, March 21, where she urged those listening to make learning a lifelong endeavor.

Maverick powers up with Google

Meti Kebede, junior data science major, has become the first UTA student to complete a Google Career Certificate that’s equipping students with job-ready skills, Spectrum News reported. UTA’s Power Up + Tech Up program is part of a larger partnership between the University of Texas System and Google that will award up to 10,000 UT System students across eight universities with Google Career Certificates.

Student exit survey

GADE Conference

Mavericks who are interested in pursuing doctoral studies in social work can meet with doctoral program directors from across the country at this week's GADE Conference, hosted by UTA's School of Social Work. Attend conference sessions March 29-31 at the Hilton Arlington to learn about the benefits and challenges of pursuing a doctoral degree.

Criminal justice jobs

Connect with criminal justice employers, including law enforcement, community corrections, victim advocates, and more, at the Criminal Justice Career and Internship Fair Thursday, March 30, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the Central Library 6th floor atrium.

Pantry donations

The Maverick Pantry accepts gently used household items (i.e., plates, silverware, photo frames, cups, etc.). Items can be dropped off during operating hours Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., or in the donation bin near the front door at 520 S. Center St. near College Park Center.

Ukraine lecture

Brian Whitmore, assistant professor of practice, presents a public lecture on "Ukraine and the Final Stage of the Soviet Collapse" Wednesday, April 5, at 12 p.m. Join in person in room 153 of the Business Building or online via Microsoft Teams. The event is sponsored by the Charles T. McDowell Center for Global Studies.

The Big Event

Volunteer registration for The Big Event 2023 is open to the public until Friday, April 7. Join UTA's largest day of community service on Saturday, April 22, and give back to the Dallas-Arlington-Fort Worth Metroplex at any of 40 project sites, including local parks, schools, nursing homes, charities, and more. Service projects are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and all participants will receive free lunch at a Brazos Park celebration post-event. Distinguished speaker Julieta V. García

The Center for Mexican American Studies presents a lecture by Julieta V. García titled "Persistence Counts" on Wednesday, April 12. Drawing on her experiences as a public servant and community leader, Dr. García will discuss the significance of Hispanic/Latino representation in American society, politics, and higher education.

Seeking tour guides

The Office of Admissions is hiring MavElite Tour Guides to welcome prospective students to campus. Apply via Handshake by Thursday, April 13. The positions pay $10.50/hour and are open to all current UTA students.

GET PHIT

Undergraduate students interested in public health informatics and technology are invited to apply for the GET PHIT summer boot camp, a two-week introduction to public health informatics, data standards, analytics, epidemiology, and more.
