Scammers threatening students
|
Scammers are calling international students claiming to be from UTA’s legal department, threatening their arrest, and demanding money.
The caller tells the students they are missing paperwork and that they and their parents in their home country could be imprisoned. The criminal then suggests the students send money via Zelle in increments to pay the caller for doing the paperwork. The caller also tells the student to delete social media accounts and turn off their computer and phone after the payment is made.
UT Arlington officials will not contact you in this manner or threaten arrest for missing paperwork or non-payment of debts.
Call the UT Arlington Police Department at 817-272-3381 if you encounter or have been a victim of this type of scam, if you are unable to verify the legitimacy of such a call, or if you have information about the people committing this scam.
Read more about scams from the UTA Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Federal Trade Commission.
