Wilson remembered

Don Wilson, associate chair of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, passed away suddenly on April 11. “Don touched us with his gifts of gentleness, wisdom, and generosity of time, talent, and treasure," said Erian Armanios, chair of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

Pop culture award

Christopher Conway and Antoinette Sol, professors in the Department of Modern Languages, received the Ray and Pat Brown Award for Best Edited Collection in Popular and American Culture for their collection The Comic Book Western: New Perspectives on a Global Genre from The Popular Culture Association.

Black maternal health

Kyrah Brown, UTA assistant professor of kinesiology, spoke to Fort Worth Report about how UTA is celebrating Black Maternal Health Week. Brown said the events are a way to "celebrate Black birthing joy."

Nonprofit impact

Arlington leaders want to know how many nonprofit organizations operate in town, the communities they serve, and their needs, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Researchers with UTA's College of Architecture, Planning, and Public Affairs will help create a list of organizations, a data dashboard, a one-day workshop, and report. Emily Nwakpuda, UTA assistant professor, spoke with KERA about the project's mission.

Spring Forward

Free concert

The UTA Department of Music invites all Mavericks to enjoy a free concert featuring Scott Sean White and Grammy-nominated musicians Sierra Hull and Justin Moses on Friday, April 14, at 7 p.m. at Levitt Pavilion in Arlington. Food trucks will be available. Bring blankets, food, and chairs for an enjoyable evening.

New travel and expenses software

Coming soon to UTA, Concur will modernize, automate, and connect travel and expense processes. To learn more, visit the project website and register to attend an information session on April 20 or 25.

Blood drive

Stop by the Central Library or the University Center Mall April 17-19, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., to donate blood during the Carter Blood Drive. Opportunities for volunteers are also available.

Join the UTA research community on Monday, April 24, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. for A Celebration of Research and Innovation featuring panels, posters, exhibits, and presentations by faculty, staff, and student inventors. Participants will network with other Maverick inventors, discover research opportunities, and connect with community partners. Participants must register to attend.

UTA spirit

In national competitions April 6-10, UTA spirit groups ranked among the top talent. In College Classic competitions, the dance team placed first in the hip hop category and second in team performance. UTA cheerleaders placed fourth in the NCAA Collegiate National Championship.

MAC renovation

New flooring, equipment, and other upgrades will be installed in the Maverick Activities Center second floor fitness center and weight room May 13-July 9. During that time, the fitness area will be closed. Read more about the renovation.

Coding camp
