Maverick educators support local math teachers

Two faculty members from the College of Education have received a $5.6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Elementary & Secondary Education to support approximately 300 middle-grade mathematics teachers in the Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston regions.

Nonprofit perspective

UTA has partnered with the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation, Tarrant County, and the city of Arlington to help design and launch the State of the Sector: Catalyzing a Thriving Nonprofit Community initiative. The project, which includes an 18-month comprehensive research study, is a big step forward in understanding the needs of area nonprofits.

Cultural anthropology lecture

Pioneering cultural anthropologist Elizabeth Briody emphasized the value of networking and relationship-building to an audience of students and current and future anthropologists at the 23rd annual Ben and Trudy Termini Distinguished Anthropology Lecture, which took place March 23 at UTA.

Cavanagh takes position at University of Wisconsin

Dan Cavanagh, who in numerous leadership roles at UTA oversaw the development of new degree paths in music and other liberal arts programs, is leaving the University for a new role at the University of Wisconsin. He will be the next director of the Mead Witter School of Music, effective July 1. An accomplished composer and pianist, Cavanagh advanced the University’s curriculum through the creation of bachelor's programs in music industry studies, modern languages, and applied sociology and a master’s program in jazz composition.

Spring Forward

Get moving with UT System's Spring Forward team challenge. Groups of five to seven participants are encouraged to collectively log 1 million steps April 3-30. For more information and to register, visit go.uta.edu/wellness.

Learn about Islam

This Ramadan, UTA employees are invited to join the Staff Advisory Council and Women's Faculty and Staff Network as they learn about Islam, its common misconceptions, and methods to support students and colleagues who observe. Group discussions will be held April 3 and April 17, 2:30-4 p.m, in the San Saba room of the University Center. Seating is limited; participants should register in advance.

International Week

International Week returns April 3-7, featuring workshops, a food fair, karaoke night, and more. Visit the Office of International Education website to view the schedule of events.

Take Back the Night

Campus and community partners will be handing out free swag, offering survivor support, and educating students on sexual assault and relationship violence prevention at Take Back the Night Wednesday, April 5, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Brazos Park. The first 200 students will receive a bonus swag bag. The event is sponsored by Relationship Violence and Sexual Assault Prevention.

Employee Service Awards

Employees who have served UTA for 10 years or more in five-year increments are invited to participate in this year's Employee Recognition Service Awards, hosted by the Office of Talent, Culture, and Inclusion. View the event page to check for your name and RSVP to attend.

Employees who have served for 25 years or more can RSVP to attend the Service Awards Dinner on Wednesday, April 5, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Those who have been employed at the University for 10, 15, or 20 years can RSVP to attend the Service Awards Reception on Wednesday, April 12, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Graduate School Bound

Students who are interested in pursuing graduate studies at UTA can learn about advanced admission, academic research, and graduate school funding at Graduate School Bound on Wednesday, April 12, 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., in the University Center San Saba room on the second floor.

Connect to the community

Visit the Volunteer Fair on Tuesday, April 18, on the second floor of the University Center to learn about opportunities to help the community. All faculty, staff, and students are welcome to attend and connect with local service organizations.

Recycle your electronic waste

Bring your electronic waste to the recycling centers at the University Center Mall on Friday, April 21, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., to keep them out of landfills. Monitors, televisions, keyboards, laptops, phones, and more will be accepted.

Jazz Brunch

Jazz Brunch is back! Visit the Main Street Arts Festival in Fort Worth on Saturday, April 22, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., for a special UTA brunch with live jazz performances. Find more details and ticket information at give.uta.edu/jazzbrunch.

Brian Whitmore, assistant professor of practice, presents a public lecture on "Ukraine and the Final Stage of the Soviet Collapse" Wednesday, April 5, at 12 p.m. Join in person in room 153 of the Business Building or online via Microsoft Teams. The event is sponsored by the Charles T. McDowell Center for Global Studies.
