In newest Texas state park, a Maverick leads the way

For James Adams (’17 MPA), the commute to work isn’t far. In fact, he arrives the moment he steps out of his front door and into 4,000-plus acres of rugged wilderness. As superintendent of the soon-to-be-opened Palo Pinto Mountains State Park—Texas’ 90th state park and the first in North Texas in over 25 years—Adams lives onsite and oversees every phase of its development.

Sanitary sewers

Mohammad Najafi, associate professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, received a one-year, $300,000 competitive grant from the Water Research Foundation to evaluate a trenchless process to renew sanitary sewer pipes in Soapstone Valley Park, a popular Washington, D.C., attraction.

Maverick Speakers Series

The Maverick Speakers Series presents Indra Nooyi Tuesday, March 21, at 7:30 p.m., Nooyi is an experienced leader in the business world and has held executive positions at major companies all over the globe. She is also a revered role model for women and immigrants and celebrated for her empowering messages on inclusivity. Tickets are free for the campus community and $5 for the general public.

Ramadan on campus

This Ramadan, UTA employees are invited to join the Staff Advisory Council and Women's Faculty and Staff Network as they learn about Islam, common misconceptions about it, and methods to support students and colleagues who observe. Group discussions will be held March 20, April 3, and April 17, 2:30-4:00 p.m, in the San Saba room of the University Center. Seating is limited; participants should register in advance.

National Public Health Week at UTA

Celebrate National Public Health Week with the College of Nursing and Health Innovation April 3-7. Events include seminars on emergency management, rural health, and health equity. To see the full list of events, visit events.uta.edu.

The Big Event

Volunteer registration for The Big Event 2023 is open to the public until Friday, April 7. Join UTA's largest day of community service on Saturday, April 22, and give back to the Dallas-Arlington-Fort Worth Metroplex at any of 40 project sites, including local parks, schools, nursing homes, charities, and more. Service projects are 9 a.m.-1 p.m., and all participants will receive free lunch at a Brazos Park celebration post-event. Jazz Brunch

Jazz Brunch is back! Visit the Main Street Arts Festival in Fort Worth on Saturday, April 22, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. for a special UTA brunch with live jazz performances. Find more information and tickets at give.uta.edu/jazzbrunch.

Network Switch Refresh

The Office of Information Technology is updating UTA’s network infrastructure across campus. The project involves building-by-building activity after regular business hours. To view when your building is impacted, visit the project website, which will be updated as the project progresses.

Policy updates

AA-UA-PO-05 Graduate Assistant Tuition Support Policy

This policy was updated to align with the provost's announcement that as of this semester, UTA will begin paying 100% of the tuition and mandatory fees for students enrolled in a Ph.D. program or the Master of Architecture, Master of Fine Arts, or Master of Landscape Architecture. This is an increase from the varying levels of support being paid under our current policy.

EI-PO-01 Dishonest or Fraudulent Activities Policy

This policy was updated to align with UTS 118 Dishonest or Fraudulent Activities, whereby, “Institutional personnel who become aware of an allegation of misconduct by an institutional president must immediately forward the allegation to the U.T. System Office of Systemwide Compliance." Reporting requirements were changed from the Office of Internal Audit and Consulting to University Compliance Services. In addition, the chief compliance officer was listed as the designated investigation coordinator responsible for tracking and coordinating investigations alleging dishonest or fraudulent activity, with the assistance of the Office of Audit and Consulting Services and the Office of Legal Affairs.

EI-PO-02 Conflicts of Interest, Conflicts of Commitment, and Outside Activities

This policy was updated by adding a section on “Institutional Conflict of Interest” and a related definition.

HR-E-PR-26 Completion of Employment Eligibility Verification Form I-9 Procedure

This procedure was updated as part of a regularly scheduled five-year review. The procedure name was changed from “Immigration and Naturalization Service Form I-9 Procedure." Language was updated to state that an employee must affirm they are a U.S. citizen, a lawful permanent resident of the U.S., or an alien authorized to work in the U.S.
