Cavallo recognized for advancing science education

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has named Ann Cavallo, assistant vice provost and distinguished professor of science education, as a fellow of the organization. The AAAS council recognized Dr. Cavallo’s distinguished contributions to the advancement of science education, particularly for STEM teachers, regionally and nationally.

Cordero named interim vice provost

Minerva Cordero, professor of mathematics and senior associate dean for research and graduate studies in the College of Science, has been named interim vice provost for faculty affairs. In recent years, Dr. Cordero has received multiple national awards, including the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring and a fellowship with the Association for Women in Mathematics.

Journey into Black history

The College of Business' Diversity, Racial Equity, and Inclusion Group will host Jerry Hawkins, executive director of Dallas Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation and co-founder of The Imagining Freedom Institute, for a public lecture titled "A Journey into the Black History of Arlington, Fort Worth, and Tarrant County" Thursday, Feb. 9, from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.

February is American Heart Month. To celebrate, wear red on Friday, Feb. 10, and join the UTA community at 10 a.m. for a 10-minute walk on the library mall. Tag your selfies with #utheartwalk and #MavWell.

Outstanding student leaders

The Outstanding Student Leader Awards recognize students for their commitment to community, demonstrated leadership skills, and lasting impact at UTA. UTA faculty, staff, and students are invited to nominate any student leader for this year's awards. Submit your nominations by Friday, Feb. 17.

Prospective and current Mavericks can discover the tools to apply for scholarships with confidence at the Maverick Scholarship Summit Saturday, Feb. 18, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m at the University Center. Register to attend.

TExBioMed Summer Institute

The Training and Experiential Learning in Biomedical Informatics (TExBioMed) Summer Institute at UTA supports short-term training that prepares undergraduate students for biomedical informatics and data science graduate studies and research careers. Eleven students will each receive a $7,200 stipend to participate. The deadline to apply is Tuesday, Feb. 28.

UTA Night with the Mavericks

Join UTA alumni and friends to cheer on the Dallas Mavericks as they take on the Utah Jazz Tuesday, March 7, at 7:30 p.m. Purchase discounted tickets to receive an exclusive hat and entry to take a shot from the free-throw line!
