The Investiture of President Jennifer Cowley

Cowley formally inaugurated Friday

All faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members are invited to the formal inauguration of President Jennifer Cowley at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, at College Park Center. A festival reception on Spaniolo Drive follows the event.

Duo make 40 Under 40 list

Christopher McMurrough and Ashley Purgason were named to the inaugural class of 40 Under 40 recipients sponsored by the Greater Arlington Chamber of Commerce and Arlington Today. Dr. McMurrough is an associate professor in instruction of computer science and engineering. Dr. Purgason is associate vice provost for student success.

BioWorks for North Texas

UTA will work with Collin College, Dallas College, and Tarrant County College to create BioWorks for North Texas, an introductory “boot camp” to train 800 participants from historically underserved North Texas communities for entry-level biotech employment.

Veterans helping veterans

After serving their country, veterans at UTA have turned their service-first energy toward each other, working arm in arm as they journey through life after the military.

Alaskan research

Matt Walsh, associate professor of biology, and his students are documenting the size and behavioral differences among water fleas in nine Alaskan lakes during a multiyear whole ecosystem restoration initiated by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

Circuit efficiency

Chenyun Pan, an assistant professor of electrical engineering, has earned a research grant from the U.S. Department of Energy through its Early Career Research Program. Dr. Pan will work to create scalable and reconfigurable computing circuits that will increase energy efficiency and speed.

College 101

College 101

UTA and Canales Furniture are hosting their first College 101 series event today, Thursday, Sept. 29. The bilingual recruitment event is for Dallas and Tarrant County high school seniors, who will learn about UTA and the Dallas Promise and Tarrant To and Through (T3) partnerships.

Community Partner Breakfast

Learn how to create service learning projects in academic courses at the annual Community Partner Breakfast, which brings together faculty, staff, and administrators with nonprofit agency representatives. The event is 8-10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 30, followed by the Volunteer Opportunity Exchange.

National Night Out

The UTA Police Department will host National Night Out 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, at Brazos Park. The event includes free food, prizes, activities, and demonstrations related to public safety. Bring canned food donations for the Maverick Pantry and receive an extra ticket for prize drawings.

DEI Conference

"A Day In Your Shoes" is the topic of UTA's first Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Conference 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4. The event challenges guests to view things from the perspective of a different identity. Lunch provided; RSVP required.

Faculty Affairs is taking faculty mentor applications. Experienced faculty mentors are vital components in assisting new faculty through their early faculty years.

New rate agreement for on-campus research

UTA’s new Facility and Administration (Indirect Cost) Rate Agreement contains an increase for on-campus research. Principle investigators are advised to work with the Office of Grants and Contracts to incorporate changes into project budgets. Learn more at resources.uta.edu/research

Policy updates

HR-E-PR-08 Beginning and Ending Dates of Appointment Procedure—This procedure was updated to reflect current timekeeping and payroll practices, including the use of Timeclock Plus.

HR-E-PR-20 Relocation Allowance Procedure—This procedure outlines the processes to be followed when extending offers to prospective employees that may have necessary relocation expenses, including eligibility for relocation expenses and the maximum amount UTA may contribute toward relocation expenses.

HR-SPE-PR-01 Staff Performance Management Review—This procedure was updated to reflect current performance review practices for staff, including the electronic performance evaluation process currently in use.

Be part of Leadership Academy

Faculty and staff are encouraged to apply for the UTA Leadership Academy, a broad leadership development program that includes the essential characteristics and skills needed to be an effective leader in a higher education environment.

The spring cohort of 15-20 faculty and staff will focus on practical leadership topics, issues within higher education, and personal leadership development.

Applications are due by Monday, Oct. 31.
