Commencement ceremonies begin today

The latest milestone on the shared educational journey of identical twin sisters Angie and Bonnie Creel comes Friday, when they graduate from UT Arlington. They both are graduating with Bachelor of Science in Education degrees from the College of Education.

Commencement ceremonies run through Saturday, May 14, at College Park Center.

Each ceremony will be livestreamed via go.uta.edu/commencement. A virtual Commencement will be available starting Saturday, May 14.

Latino grads honored

Celebrando el Éxito (celebrating success) honored, recognized, and celebrated Latino graduates who earned degrees in fall 2021, spring 2022, and summer 2022.

Black Excellence

At An Evening of Black Excellence, graduating Black, African, and African American students were honored with a ceremony that embraced the pillars of scholarship, heritage, culture, and community.

Luke Frishkoff and Alexander Murray document the rivalry between the Texas spiny lizard and the prairie lizard.

When the lizards meet, the Texas spiny lizard exhibits aggressive behavior, chasing the terrified prairie lizard from its territory.

Frishkoff is an assistant professor of biology. Murray is a fourth-year doctoral student.

Roshan Mashal

Mashal honored for human rights work

Roshan Mashal, a Texas International Education Consortium fellow at UTA, was honored by the humanitarian organization Refugees International with its 2022 Exceptional Service Award for her extraordinary commitment to human rights in Afghanistan.

Preserving a Shared Heritage

Join a virtual panel discussion on preserving historical narratives and listen to personal stories that honor Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. The event is 2:30 p.m. Thursday, May 19, in the sixth floor parlor of the Central Library.

Asian Heritage Celebration

Come out to the Asian Heritage Celebration 4-8 p.m. Sunday, May 15, at the Levitt Pavillion in downtown Arlington. For the free event, bring your chairs, blankets, food, and drinks. Area parking is free. Food trucks will be on site.

TCP training sessions

Two-part TCP training sessions for managers and timekeepers are offered in person Thursday-Friday May 26-27. Register to attend.

Flexible summer hours program coming

The popular flexible summer hours program runs Monday, June 6–Friday Aug. 12. Participating employees—including remote workers—work a compressed week of four 10-hour days with one day off during the work week.

Managers must provide the employee with an approved schedule in writing before the employee may begin the program. Leaders should manage this program at the department/college level. Non-exempt employees must take a minimum 30-minute lunch break.

Teaching in the Archives

Applications for the Faculty Teaching in the Archives Grant Program for the 2022-23 academic year are due Friday, May 27. The grant program is aimed at faculty who would like to design or invigorate an undergraduate or graduate course with unique content from UTA Libraries Special Collections.

Power Outage

Power outage at SEIR

An electrical outage for the SEIR Building is set for 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, May 21. The building’s generator will be operational. If you have any questions or concerns, contact either Nick Myers at nmyers@uta.edu, Toby Buhrkuhl at tbuhrkuhl@uta.edu, or Jeff Johnson at jljohnson@uta.edu.

Steam outage to start Monday

The Thermal Energy Plant has planned its annual outage of campus steam service to complete inspection and repair requirements of the system components. The outage is scheduled to begin at midnight on Monday, May 16. Normal operations should resume by 10 p.m. on Saturday, May 21.

During the time designated, the buildings served by the Thermal Energy Plant will be without hot water and steam, including heated water for the swimming pool. Electrical power, air conditioning, chilled water, and domestic cold water services will still be available.
