movin' mavs 8th national title

Movin' Mavs win 8th national title; first for coach Garner

The Movin' Mavs men's team won its eighth national championship title, the first under Coach Doug Garner, with a 76-52 victory over Wisconsin-Whitewater on Saturday in the National Wheelchair Basketball Intercollegiate Championship Tournaments in Whitewater, Wisc. The team scored 68-44 over Alabama on Friday and 76-34 over Auburn on Thursday.

The team won seven national titles under the program's founder and coach, the late Jim Hayes. Garner was named coach in 2008 after Hayes' death.

The Lady Movin' Mavs earned second place after a 57-48 loss to Alabama, which took the crown Saturday in the women's tournament. UTA, last year's champion and this year's No. 1 seed, beat Illinois by 68-19 Thursday in the semi-finals.

Maverick men head to BYU for NIT first round; teams fall in Sun Belt semi finals

The UTA men's basketball team will face Brigham Young University on Wednesday in Provo, Utah, in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament. The team, which is making its third NIT appearance, is seeded sixth in its region, while BYU is a No. 3 seed. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m., and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN2. The No. 1 seed going into the Sun Belt Conference Championship Tournaments, the Mavs lost 83-62 to Texas State in the semifinals on Saturday. LEARN MORE.

The Lady Mavs, a No. 2 seed, fell 88-59 to Troy on Saturday in the SBC women's tournament. The team will learn tonight about a possible WNIT appearance or another tournament game. LEARN MORE.

Candidates for provost to visit campus

Candidates for provost and vice president for academic affairs will have sessions open to the University community at 4 p.m. Monday, March 20, in Room 254 of the Business Building and 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 22, in Room 252 of the Business Building. Each candidate will speak and then answer questions.

The candidate's name will be released 24 hours in advance of his or her campus visit.

Spring Break is here; check hours for dining, more

Spring Break at UTA means no classes this week, but offices are open through Thursday, March 16. The University is closed Friday, March 17. See the Spring Break schedules for campus dining, the Maverick Activities Center, UTA Libraries, the UTA Bookstore, and the Mav Mover shuttles. The University Club in Davis Hall is closed this week except for a St. Patrick's Day buffet Wednesday, March 15. See the flyer below.
