Dr. Teresa Taber Doughty

New dean of UTA College of Education named

Teresa Taber Doughty, Purdue University’s associate dean of learning and a nationally recognized leader in special education, autism, and other developmental disabilities, joins UTA as dean of the College of Education on Aug. 1.

Dr. Doughty brings more than 30 years of experience as an educator, faculty member, and university administrator, and as teacher to children with disabilities in Alabama and Georgia. She has held faculty positions at Georgia State University, Oglethorpe University, and Purdue University.

Institute of Urban Studies to investigate walkability of downtown Dallas

The College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs (CAPPA) is partnering with the city of Dallas to find out if downtown Dallas is walkable. Students from CAPPA’s Institute of Urban Studies are embarking on an analysis of pedestrian traffic along 184 street segments and 66 intersections throughout downtown.

The results will be used to further understand the street-level experience for people who work, live, and visit downtown.

UTA receives $100,000 gift for Career Development Center

Texas Trust Credit Union has given $100,000 in support of UTA's Career Development Center, a 6,000 square-foot facility that will serve as a resource connecting students and alumni with professional opportunities.

The gift was presented to President Vistasp Karbhari; Tim Quinnan, vice president for student affairs; and Michael Kingan, vice president for development and alumni relations. Since 2013, Texas Trust Credit Union has been the official credit union sponsor for UTA intercollegiate athletics.

The Career Development Center's new home in the E.H. Hereford University Center will include the eight room Texas Trust Credit Union Interview Suite.

Nedderman-Planetarium Place intersection to close for three days

Due to infrastructure upgrades, the intersection at South Nedderman Drive and Planetarium Place will be closed Monday-Wednesday, July 11-13. For questions or concerns, contact Jeff Johnson at jljohnson@uta.edu.

  • For ADA parking behind the Central Library, cut through the Maverick Parking Garage.
  • Large deliveries to Life Science Building or the Central Library will be through the front entrances of the buildings.
  • Drop offs for Planetarium shows will be redirected to the West Street circle.

Faculty assistance needed for sustainability and curriculum workshops

The Institute for Sustainability and Global Impact encourages faculty members to assist UTA in becoming a partner institution for Center for Sustainability Across the Curriculum. SAC representative nominations needed

Nominations for the Staff Advisory Council are open through July 16. The election is set for July 20-Aug. 3. Eligible voters in this election cycle are staff members below assistant director who do not report directly to a dean or vice president. Go to the SAC website and log in using your NetID and password. Click on Nominate. Select the name from the listing to nominate your district’s SAC representatives.

New online learning platform offers courses, books, videos

All UTA staff and faculty have access to the new UT System Learning Zone, an online platform providing access to a diverse library of courses, books, videos, and other resources that cover a wide variety of subjects from highly technical topics to software application instruction to personal skills development.

These resources can be used as reference tools to help answer day-to-day, on-the-job questions or as part of your personal and career development goals.

Annual Enrollment for your UT System benefits runs Friday, July 15-Sunday, July 31.

Mark your calendar for the UTA Benefits Fair 9 a.m.-noon Monday, July 25, in the second floor lounge at the Maverick Activities Center. Highlights for the new 2016-2017 benefit year will be discussed. Insurance and financial vendors and representatives from the Office of Employee Benefits in Austin will be there to answer questions. Women's golf staff: Catherine Matranga is the new assistant coach for the women's golf team. UTA women's golf begins play at the start of the 2017-18 season. Read more.

Sports Shorts

  • Junior Tobi Fawehinmi will compete with Team USA in track and field at the 2016 Paralympic Games Sept. 7-18 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. At the 2012 London Games, Fawehinmi finished fifth in the triple jump and was 10th in the long jump. Read more.
  • Former UTA sprinters Clayton Vaughn and Quentin Butle are bidding for spots on the U.S. Olympic Team at the Track & Field Olympic Team Trials in Eugene, Ore. Read more.
  • The Maverick volleyball 2016-17 schedule is online. The Sun Belt Conference Volleyball Championship will be Nov. 18 at College Park Center. Read more.

Fast times at Autocross Weekend in Lot 49

Student-designed and -built FSAE race cars will be the norm at the 16th Annual Texas Autocross Weekend Friday-Saturday, July 9-10.

About 30 cars built to Formula Society of Automotive Engineers specifications will compete on Lot 49 east of South Cooper Street and south of Doug Russell Road.

For the first time, one of the UTA competition cars will be an all-electric vehicle powered by four student-designed, in-wheel motors. Read more.
