Office of the President, UTA

November 16, 2020

Dear Students,

UTA is approaching the end of the fall semester and will be making important changes to course modality, building access, schedules, and operations after Thanksgiving. As previously announced, UTA is moving all classes online after Thanksgiving. The last day of in-person classes will be Nov. 24. That means all classes, including face-to-face and hybrid courses, will switch to online-only modality after Nov. 26 through the end of the semester.

This decision was made well before the start of the fall semester to minimize the possibility of students and employees becoming COVID-19 positive during the break, then spreading the virus on campus upon their return. Given the ongoing community spread, this remains our most prudent course of action.

COVID-19 testing and Thanksgiving travel: The American College Health Association recommends students be tested for COVID prior to traveling for the Thanksgiving holidays. Please note, the CDC does not recommend testing if you have already tested positive in the preceding three months and do not currently have symptoms.

UTA Health Services continues to offer free COVID-19 testing for students. Appointments are available on the following days: Wednesday, Nov. 18, from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. and Monday, Nov. 23, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. There are a limited number of spots available. Therefore, an appointment is required. You can schedule an appointment through the MavCare Patient Portal by going to https://mavcare.uta.edu.

Campus operations after Thanksgiving: While the campus will remain open after Thanksgiving, there will be important changes to both building access and schedules. Below are some of the post-Thanksgiving changes you can expect, along with UTA resources for you to utilize. A more detailed list is available on our FAQ page.

Academic help: UTA will continue to provide a variety of resources and programs designed to help you develop academic skills and better understand concepts and information related to your courses. Resources include:

Please contact studentsuccess@uta.edu with any questions or for help in determining the best service for you.

Academic advising: Most academic advising will continue to be available virtually. However, students are encouraged to communicate with their home department for details. Some departments may offer opportunities for socially distanced, face-to-face walk-in advising, as an example. Students may locate contact information for advising from their home department by going to the Departmental Advising website.

Academic buildings: Most academic buildings will be locked after Thanksgiving, with access only available via card swipe for faculty, staff, and approved students. Access to labs, music practice rooms, studios, and other such campus spaces will be permitted, but check with your instructor, school, or college on specific room information.

Health Services & COVID-19 testing: After Thanksgiving, UTA Health Services will maintain its usual hours until the end of the fall semester. Visits are available by appointment only. Walk-ins are scheduled for the next available appointment.

Technology support: The Office of Information Technology has resources available for exam-related technical support. You also can check for computer lab availability and locations.

UTA Libraries: Central Library will be open after we return from the Thanksgiving break on Monday, Nov. 30. The hours will be Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. – 9 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.; Sunday, 1 p.m. – 9 p.m.

From Dec. 7 through Dec. 16, the Central Library will have extended hours during final exams: Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. – midnight; Saturday, 7 a.m. – 6 p.m.; Sunday, 1 p.m. - midnight.

University Center and Commons: The University Center and Commons will operate on the following schedule after the break: 7 a.m. – 9 p.m. Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The Commons will be closed from Dec. 13 through Jan. 14.

On-campus dining: The following schedules will be in effect from Nov. 29 to Dec. 18:

  • Connections Café will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
  • In the University Center, Starbucks will be open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 2 p.m., with breakfast meal exchange hours ending daily at 10:30 a.m.
  • Subway will be open Monday through Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • The Market in the UC will be open Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and weekends from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Maverick Activities Center: From Nov. 30 until Dec. 18, the Maverick Activities Center will be open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 8 p.m. on weekends. The MAC will be closed Dec. 19, Dec. 20, and Dec. 24 – Jan. 3. From Dec. 21 – Dec. 23, it will be open from noon to 8 p.m.

The schedules above are preliminary and subject to change. It’s important for students to visit the UTA Coronavirus Information website, follow UTA on social media, and keep an eye on email and TrailBlazer for updates.

Our approach to the fall 2020 semester, which included decreasing our on-campus presence, daily self-monitoringwearing masks, and social distancing, helped us minimize the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Thank you for doing your part to protect yourself and fellow Mavericks.

Should you need to come to campus, please remember to perform a daily health screening; do not come if you are experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms. If you have been in close contact with a COVID-19-positive individual or have received a personal diagnosis, please report it to UTA through this form.

As a Community that Cares, UTA, our faculty, and our staff continue to keep your health and well-being at the center of all we do, and we care deeply about your education and success. Thank you, have a Happy Thanksgiving, and go Mavs!

Sincerely,

Teik C. Lim
