Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Offering bachelor's, Master's, and Ph.D degrees and minors in both mechanical engineering and aerospace engineering

What Do Aerospace Engineers and Mechanical Engineers Do?

Few professions unleash the spirit of innovation like Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. From flight to alternative energy, we constantly discover bold solutions that connect science to life. Mechanical engineers are versatile and are found in many private and public sector organizations. They may be involved in product design and development, manufacturing, project management, power generation, or other operations. Rapid advances in technology require aerospace engineers to develop new concepts and bring them to reality as reliable, competitive, environmentally-acceptable products.

Aerospace Engineering

Rapid advances in aerospace systems require the successful aerospace engineer to develop new concepts and bring them into reality as reliable, competitive, and environmentally acceptable products. Housed within the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department, the aerospace engineering graduate program provides advanced training to prepare students for careers in aerospace system research and development, conceptual flight vehicle design, or higher education. UTA's aerospace engineering researchers have received high levels of research funding from NSF, DOE, ONR, NASA, DOD and other federal, industrial and state sources in the areas of materials, unmanned vehicle systems, design and development of air and space vehicles, and more.

Mechanical Engineering

UTA's mechanical engineering program allows students to enhance technical competence in areas of mechanical engineering practice; explore design, development, research, experimentation, and/or analysis in joint efforts with faculty and peers; enter career fields allied with the mechanical engineering discipline; and complete coursework for programs leading to careers that require interdisciplinary competence. To meet the educational goal of a broad-based technical background in mechanical engineering, each student will obtain in-depth knowledge in at least two areas. The department’s growth is aided by high levels of research funding from NSF, DOE, ONR, DOD and other federal, industrial and state sources in the areas of design, manufacturing and multidisciplinary optimization, structural mechanics and optimization and thermal science and energy systems.

About Mechanical and Aerospace Academic Programs

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering offers baccalaureate, masters and doctoral degree programs in Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering, and Certificate Programs in Automotive Engineering, Electronic Packaging, and Unmanned Vehicle Systems. Major focus areas within the Department include Design, Manufacturing and Multidisciplinary Optimization; Dynamic Systems and Controls; Fluid Mechanics, Aerodynamics and Propulsion; Structural Mechanics and Structural Optimization; and Thermal Sciences and Energy Systems.

Fast Track Program to Master’s Degree

The Fast Track Program enables outstanding senior undergraduate students to receive dual undergraduate/ graduate course credit for up to nine hours of coursework. These designated graduate courses satisfy both bachelor’s and master’s degree requirements if they are completed within the last 15 hours of the undergraduate degree program. Interested undergraduate students should apply to the appropriate program when they are within 30 hours of completing their bachelor’s degrees. The following fast track programs are offered:

  • Fast Track Program to Master’s Degree in Aerospace Engineering for Aerospace Engineering Undergraduate Students
  • Fast Track Program to Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering for Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Students
  • Fast Track Program to Master’s Degree in Materials Science and Engineering for Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Students

B.S. to Ph.D. Program

The B.S. to Ph.D. Program is an accelerated program in which the student bypasses the M.S. thesis and proceeds directly to the Ph.D. dissertation research.
