If you're interested in pursuing this program of study, also be sure to read the Admissions Requirements (PDF) for Linguistics & TESOL graduate programs. But please note this change regarding the Graduate Record Exam: “Pending policy review by the University Texas System, the GRE is no longer a requirement for applicants to the PhD in Linguistics graduate program. The GRE will be optional for applicants to the Linguistics PhD Program. Admission based entirely on other qualifications is possible for students who do not submit scores i.e., applicants wishing to start studies in the Linguistics PhD Program in Fall 2025 or later are no longer required to submit GRE test scores. The PhD in Linguistics graduate program will not consider GRE scores when making admissions decisions. It is therefore unnecessary to take the GRE or report scores to apply for admission.”
PhD students entering with an M.A. in Linguistics from UT Arlington may be able to waive up to 15 hours, at the discretion of the department’s Graduate Studies Committee, for equivalent graduate linguistics courses completed with a grade of B or higher.
