Scholarship Opportunities

The College of Liberal Arts is proud to offer numerous scholarships to better support our undergraduate and graduate students. Each of these scholarships is funded by an alumnus, friend of the university or foundation that recognizes and supports the goals of CoLA and The University of Texas at Arlington.

To apply for a scholarship:

  • Create a profile in the Mav ScholarShop site.
  • Select the scholarship(s) for which you wish to apply. (Several CoLA scholarships are listed below.)
  • Complete the application process (essays, letters of recommendations, etc.) before the deadline.

College of Liberal Arts Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established to award scholarships to deserving and academically promising Liberal Arts majors.

Eligibility: By the time the award semester begins applicants must have 60 or more hours with 30 hours at UTA, a GPA of 3.85 or above, and demonstrated financial need (according to FAFSA qualifications). In other words, students can apply in the spring when they have 50 hours and only 24 at UTA if by the time they will receive the money they will have at least 60 overall and 30 at UTA.

Shirlee J. and Taylor Gandy Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship is designed to provide support to rising UT Arlington sophomores on the basis of merit and financial need.

Preference will be given to first-generation students who have achieved a minimum UTA GPA of 3.0 during the freshman year. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and must not have been awarded any merit scholarship assistance as freshmen.

Newy Scruggs Scholarship for Student Enrichment Opportunities

Eligibility: Liberal Arts major, can be used for transformative opportunities outside the classroom (i.e., Travel, workshops, festivals, conferences, etc). May not be used to attend political conventions, political think tanks, or political action committees

Billy and Tilly wasson Scholarship for Study Abroad Programs

This scholarship provides scholarship awards to assist undergraduate students in good academic standing at the time of application with the expense of participating in a study abroad program.

Eligibility: Recipients must be full time students pursuing a degree from the College of Liberal Arts and may not be seeking a degree from the Honors College nor have studied abroad via a UT Arlington program. Preference will be given to first generation students who demonstrate financial need.

Lucretia Council Cochran Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution Scholarship

Eligibility: All Arlington ISD Seniors who will attend UTA; funds may only be used at UTA. Students will be judged on their graduating GPA, their national test scores, and their record of service to their school and community. Students must also write an essay about their definition of “Patriotism” and their life goals.

Graduate Funding Opportunities

The College of Liberal Arts offers a wide variety of research, travel, fellowship and dissertation funding for deserving students. Typically, these awards are designed to encourage research or creative activity that leads to the completion of your graduate degree. A limited number of Graduate Teaching & Research Assistantships are awarded by most departments. You are encouraged to visit with faculty on availability and requirements of departmental assistantships during the application process.

Dean's Award for Research Travel

Amount: Up to $500 domestic/$1,000 international plus non-travel expenses. Eligibility: Applicants must be enrolled full-time in a thesis, dissertation, portfolio, or performance graduate program in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Texas at Arlington. Students who travel in summer must be enrolled full-time in the preceding spring semester. Doctoral students who have only dissertation hours remaining may enroll in a minimum of 3 hours. Applicants must be in good academic standing; students on academic probation are not eligible. This award will not cover costs associated with conference presentations.

GTA / GRA

Ph.D. students in the college (English, History, and Linguistics) are considered for a variety of Graduate Teaching and Research Assistantships. These assistantships provide tuition assistance up to 100% and competitive stipends for up to 6 years. Please talk with the program's Ph.D. advisor for further information
